Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) announced in a press release that the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization of Japan (NEDO) has adopted a feasibility study for OTEC implementation in Mauritius. The project aims to accelerate commercialization following the successful onshore OTEC Demonstration built by Okinawa Prefecture in 2013. From April 2022, MOL is participating in operation of the facility towards accumulating knowledge for future implementation.
MOL is joined by Xenesys Inc, and Saga University for implementation of this project. “MOL aims to commercialize OTEC power generation as soon as possible in Japan and overseas by operating the Kumejima OTEC demonstration facility and conducting the verification research in Mauritius, also by utilizing the knowledge and know-how accumulated through its various offshore business and its supply chain network.”
