Akuo Energy, Pertamina to build OTEC plant in Indonesia

Akuo Energy and Pertamina have signed an MoU for developing renewable energy projects at various sites in Indonesia. The renewable projects will concern electricity generation from wind, solar photovoltaic (PV) and ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC).
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Director of New and Renewable Energy Pertamina, Yenni Andavani, and the CEO of Akuo Energy, Eric Sotto, Akuo’s press release reads.

Yenni Andavani said the projects will target remote islands of Indonesia that are highly dependent on diesel fuel for electricity generation. The first phase of the project is expected to begin this year with the selection of the 3 prospective sites for the construction of the plants.
According to the press release, the construction of the plants (wind, solar PV, OTEC) is expected to begin in 2018. Yenni Andavani said: “During 2018, we hope to develop wind, solar PV and OTEC on a large scale in order to reach the expected capacity of 560 MW of energy production set in our project portofolio.”
The development of renewable energy projects in Indonesia is triggered by the economic growth of the country, which resulted in the increase of the electricity demand by 8.5 percent. Government of Indonesia has committed to ensure that 23 percent of electricity is generated by renewables by the year 2025.
